The Origins of Afroditi Latinopoulou

Afroditi Latinopoulou was born on April 29, 1991, in Thessaloniki, where she grew up in a family of secondary school teachers. On her mother’s side, her roots trace back to the border region of Evros — specifically the village of Vrysika near Didymoteicho — where her grandfather, Father Vlassis Mamasidis, served as parish priest for many years.

Family Background and Early Life

Raised in a large, traditional, and devout family, Afroditi grew up alongside her two younger brothers, Timos and Vlassis. Values such as homeland, religion, and family were central to her upbringing. Her grandfather’s strong influence connected her early on with both the religious traditions and the resilient spirit of Thrace.

Tennis Career

Afroditi Latinopoulou developed a passion for sports at a very young age. She began playing tennis around the age of four and went on to win 15 national titles and 4 European championships. She represented the Greek national team for four years, until a serious injury in 2013 ended her athletic career and redirected her towards law.

After her injury, Afroditi pursued law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, graduating in 2017 with distinction. At the same time, she worked as a tennis coach from the age of 18. Following her graduation, she completed her legal traineeship and began practicing as a lawyer.

Political Career and Founding of “Voice of Reason”

Afroditi entered politics with New Democracy between 2016 and 2019, but left in 2021 after openly disagreeing with the party’s direction. In March 2023, she founded her own political movement, initially named Patrida (Homeland) and later Foni Logikis (Voice of Reason). In June 2024, she was elected as a Member of the European Parliament, securing more than 3% of the vote, with strong support particularly from Evros.

Political Identity and Influence

Her Thracian heritage, strong family ties to the Church, and upbringing in rural Greece have deeply shaped Afroditi Latinopoulou’s political values. Drawing from her diverse background in sports, law, and politics, she emphasizes principles such as religion, family, and national identity. She positions herself as a defender of traditional values within the contemporary euroskeptic political landscape.
