Greek Island Cracks Down on Dangerous Ferry-Diving Trend

On the small Aegean island of Sikinos, a summer ritual where youths dive into the sea as ferries depart has gained popularity, attracting tourists and social media attention. Videos show dozens of “aponeristas” leaping off the quay moments after the ferry Dionysios Solomos leaves, with crowds cheering and filming.

However, port authorities view this as a safety hazard and have started issuing fines. A Shipping Ministry official called it a “worrying phenomenon,” noting it has become a tradition for young holidaymakers. Coast guard officers issue warnings, and seven or eight participants in a recent incident were fined, with prosecutors on Naxos notified for potential further action.

While ferry propellers pose little risk due to divers’ timing, officials warn of strong currents that could sweep swimmers into collisions with each other, rocks, or harbor structures, risking injury.
