Wildfire Danger Elevated: Authorities Warn of Very High Risk in Key Greek Regions

Greek authorities have issued a high fire alert for Wednesday, warning that several regions face a very high risk of wildfires due to weather conditions.

According to the Fire Risk Forecast Map released by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, a “very high fire risk” (Category 4) has been declared for:

  • Attica Region
  • Central Greece Region (Boeotia, Euboea)
  • North Aegean Region (Lesbos, Chios, Ikaria)
  • South Aegean Region (Karpathos Prefecture)
  • Crete Region (Rethymno, Heraklion, Lasithi Prefectures)

Authorities are urging citizens to avoid any outdoor activities that could spark fires, including burning dry grass or branches, operating machinery that produces sparks, lighting barbecues, smoking out beehives, or discarding lit cigarettes.

The warning comes as Greece continues to face heightened wildfire risks during the summer season, with strong winds and high temperatures creating dangerous conditions across the country.
