Lesvos is tapping into the French market to enhance year-round tourism by showcasing its rich cultural heritage, as announced by the island’s municipal authority.

The North Aegean island aims to draw French visitors with its cultural assets, natural beauty, and unique events, promoting sustainable, all-season tourism. During a recent visit, France’s Consul General in Athens, Diane Roeser, met with West Lesvos Mayor Taxiarchis Verros and Deputy Mayor of Tourism Afroditi Vati to discuss tourism development centered on cultural experiences.

Roeser attended the Molyvos International Music Festival, experiencing Lesvos’ cultural and scenic allure firsthand. “Tourism is crucial for West Lesvos, and France is a key partner,” Vati said. “Our cultural programs provide a strong foundation for collaboration.”

Roeser learned about Lesvos’ diverse year-round offerings, including birdwatching, cycling, hiking, and visits to landmarks like the Petrified Forest, healing springs, and monasteries. Discussions highlighted the island’s historical ties to France, particularly through philosopher Albert Camus’ connection to Sigri. Plans include establishing a “Camus House” and naming a street in his honor to strengthen cultural bonds.

Verros also shared plans for a new open-air cinema to host events like the French Film Festival, successfully held in Anaxos this year.

Through these efforts, Lesvos aims to boost French visitor numbers while fostering sustainable tourism and deeper cultural ties.
