Australians traveling to Europe will face new requirements under the digital Entry and Exit System (EES), effective October 12, 2025. This applies to non-EU nationals entering or leaving the Schengen Area, covering 29 European countries with shared border rules.
EES Requirements
Travelers must:
- Provide fingerprints and a photo at the border.
- Answer a questionnaire from border staff.
These create a biometric digital record for identity verification. For return visits within three years, only fingerprints or photos are needed at entry/exit. Registration is free, but expect longer border queues initially.
Schengen Area and Rules
Australians can stay visa-free in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This limit is tied to the individual, not the passport. Overstaying may result in detention, fines, or entry bans. The EES will track compliance across all 29 countries, with full implementation by April 10, 2026.
