Tragic Car Accident on Olympia Odos Claims Two Lives

A devastating car accident on the Olympia Odos highway near Panagopoula, in the direction of Patras, turned deadly on the evening of Thursday, September 11, 2025, leaving two people dead and one seriously injured.

The collision involved two vehicles and resulted in catastrophic consequences. A 70-year-old woman, driving in the wrong direction for approximately one kilometre, was trapped in her car, which burst into flames, leading to her tragic death at the scene. The second vehicle carried two men from Megara. Both were extricated by the fire service and rushed to a nearby hospital, but one of them later succumbed to his injuries.

According to reports from the Peloponnisos newspaper, the elderly woman entered the Olympia Odos from the Selianitika interchange, heading toward Patras. Upon reaching the Panagopoula tunnels, she mistakenly entered the lane designated for trucks carrying hazardous materials. Confused, she made a U-turn and began driving against traffic toward Aigio. Despite other drivers’ attempts to warn her with honks and signals, she continued in the wrong direction until the fatal collision occurred.

The accident happened when a large pickup truck attempted to overtake another vehicle, colliding with the woman’s car. The impact caused her vehicle to flip multiple times before landing and catching fire, resulting in her death.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash, which has left the local community in shock. The Olympia Odos, a major highway connecting key regions in the Peloponnese, was temporarily closed following the incident, and images and videos from the scene have circulated widely, highlighting the tragedy’s severity.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of road safety and awareness, particularly on high-speed motorways.
