Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that he will raise the issue of acquiring F-35 fighter jets during his upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday.
Speaking on Fox News’ “Special Report” on Monday, Erdogan stressed that Ankara expects Washington to move forward not only on the F-35 program but also on matters related to F-16 procurement, production, and maintenance.
“At this stage, we will renegotiate this issue,” he said. “We expect the U.S. to do what it should – both on the F-35s and the F-16s.”
Erdogan confirmed the planned discussion before departing for New York, where he is attending the UN General Assembly. His meeting with Trump at the White House is scheduled for September 25.
According to the Turkish leader, talks will focus on bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and the defense industry, while regional challenges—including the situation in Gaza—will also be high on the agenda.
The meeting comes amid ongoing tensions over Turkey’s exclusion from the F-35 program, following its purchase of Russian S-400 missile systems, and as Ankara continues to seek modernization of its air force through alternative channels.
