Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis emphasized Greece’s stance on the recognition of a Palestinian state during the 80th United Nations General Assembly, highlighting that such recognition should occur at the conclusion of a political process under UN auspices.
Speaking to ERT, Gerapetritis underscored the unique significance of Greece’s participation as a member of the UN Security Council, which he said grants the country a “significant diplomatic footprint” and strengthens its global influence. During the Assembly, Greece engaged in a series of bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, reinforcing its regional and international alliances.
Gerapetritis also highlighted Greece’s leadership in hosting the Ministerial Conference on Ancient Civilizations, an initiative that brings together nations with shared cultural heritage and deep historical roots, fostering collaboration on preserving antiquities and modern cultural assets.
A key focus of his remarks was Greece’s participation in the Two-State Solution Conference, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, addressing the Middle East conflict. Greece has consistently supported humanitarian efforts, providing aid to Gaza, hosting children from the region, and bolstering the Palestinian Authority.
On the issue of Palestinian statehood, Gerapetritis reiterated Greece’s firm position: “The solution lies in the establishment of a Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders.” However, he stressed that the timing of recognition is critical, advocating for it to be the outcome of a UN-led political process.
The Foreign Minister’s full statement emphasized Greece’s active role in global diplomacy and its commitment to humanitarian principles, positioning the country as a proactive player in resolving international conflicts.
