A high school teacher in Thessaloniki has been sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for three years, for attending school in 2021 without presenting a negative COVID-19 self-test result, as mandated on the government’s “edupass.gov.gr” platform.
The Single-Member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki found the teacher guilty of disrupting the operation of a public service. The defendant did not appear in court and was represented by a lawyer.
During the trial, a colleague testified that the teacher had recently recovered from illness but returned to school without submitting the required negative test result. “The Joint Ministerial Decision prohibited him from entering the school. However, he went up to the teachers’ room and refused to leave, so I was forced to call the police,” she said. She emphasized that teachers were responsible for the safety of around 250 students and that he could not teach without complying with the testing rules.
Through his lawyer, the teacher argued that he had been on sick leave starting November 1, 2021, and believed that only laboratory diagnostic testing was required for teachers who could not provide proof of infection within the past six months.
The local Education Directorate had previously imposed a suspension without pay as an administrative measure against the teacher.
