Italian Tourist Dies After Collapsing on Hiking Trail in Chania

A tragic incident unfolded in Crete on Sunday, when a 70-year-old Italian tourist collapsed and died while hiking on a rugged trail near Paleochora, in the region of Chania.

According to local reports, the man felt unwell during the hike and suddenly lost consciousness. His companions immediately called the emergency number 112, prompting a large-scale mobilization of the Fire Department and the National Emergency Centre (EKAV).

Firefighters faced challenging terrain as they worked to reach the location and carry the hiker to an accessible point where an ambulance crew was waiting. Despite their coordinated and strenuous efforts, the man could not be revived.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident, while initial indications suggest the cause of death may have been health-related.
