Greek Defence Ministry to Protect Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The Greek Ministry of National Defence has announced it will take measures to ensure the maintenance and cleanliness of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens, following comments by the mayor of Athens claiming that responsibility for the site rests solely with the government.

According to the ministry, under Article 102 of the Constitution and relevant law, responsibility for public cleanliness lies with local authorities, and specifically for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, this falls under the municipality of Athens. The ministry emphasized that it cannot allow the degradation of a space dedicated to honouring those who fought for the nation.

To safeguard the site, the ministry will commission a third party to handle cleaning and maintenance for as long as necessary.

Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias has reiterated that respect for the fallen of national struggles and for history is a collective duty and responsibility of all.
