Athens, Greece – Petros Filippidis, the actor convicted earlier this year, is battling advanced diabetes that “cannot be cured” and is “slowly consuming his entire body,” his lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos revealed live on OPEN TV’s Rantevou to SK on Saturday morning.
Speaking via live link, Dimitrakopoulos confirmed that Filippidis is currently staying in a private residence in central Athens after a fire rendered his rented apartment uninhabitable. “We are awaiting the forensic report from the fire service. Arson has not been ruled out,” he stated.
On Filippidis’s health, the lawyer was blunt:
“Advanced diabetes, like the one Petros is suffering from, has no cure. It gradually destroys the body. He is fighting, but it’s a tough battle.”
Dimitrakopoulos added that Filippidis remains in contact with journalists, directors, and producers — except for one unnamed actor.
“He will name him when he’s ready. And he will speak,” the lawyer promised.
Despite his legal and health struggles, Filippidis has received multiple theater return offers. “He gets emotional — he cries when he hears them — but his focus remains on his final appeal at the Supreme Court,” Dimitrakopoulos said.
Medical Context: Can Diabetes Be Fatal?
Yes. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to life-threatening complications, including:
- Heart attack and stroke
- Kidney failure
- Diabetic ketoacidosis (acute, potentially fatal)
- Nerve and organ damage
With proper management — medication, diet, exercise, and monitoring — patients can live long, healthy lives.
