Report: Turkish Media Claims Greek Coast Guard Fired at Fishing Boat off Didim

Turkish media outlets reported on Wednesday that a Turkish fishing vessel operating off the coast of Didim — known in Greek as Δίδυμα (Dídyma) and located directly opposite the island of Kos in the Dodecanese — was allegedly fired upon by a Greek Coast Guard vessel during an incident late on the night of 18 November 2025.

The claims remain unverified, with no confirmation from Greek authorities at this stage.

According to Turkish reports, the fishing boat Hasip Reis 3 had departed from the Taşburun Fishermen’s Shelter in Didim. It was operating in nearby waters when a Greek Coast Guard team reportedly approached the vessel around midnight. Turkish media state that five shots were fired toward the boat, causing material damage but no injuries.

The fishermen reportedly contacted the Turkish Coast Guard Command, which dispatched teams to the area. By the time Turkish authorities arrived, the Greek vessel had already left the scene, according to the reports. The damaged fishing boat was later escorted back to the harbor by Turkish units.

No Greek Statement Yet

As of now, no official statement has been issued by the Hellenic Coast Guard regarding the alleged incident. Greek media have also not independently reported or confirmed the claims published in the Turkish press.

Incidents involving fishing vessels and patrol units occur periodically in the Aegean Sea, where maritime jurisdiction is highly contested and diplomatic tensions between Greece and Turkey are frequent. Previous encounters have led to differing accounts from the two sides, making independent verification essential.

Awaiting Clarification

It is expected that further information may emerge once Greek authorities respond or issue a detailed briefing. Until then, the reports of gunfire remain based solely on Turkish sources, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet apparent.

Greek City Times will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more verified information becomes available.
