Greek Australian Man Charged Over Alleged Harassment of Senator Lidia

Stefan Eracleous, 32

A 32-year-old Greek Australian man, Stefan Eracleous, has been charged with allegedly harassing Senator Lidia Thorpe through abusive emails and a threatening phone call. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) also allege that Eracleous, identified as a neo-Nazi, defaced an Aboriginal flag at Thorpe’s electoral office.

The investigation, led by the AFP’s National Security Investigations (NSI) team, began earlier this month after Thorpe’s office reported the harassing communications. On November 21, police searched a home in Mernda, seizing several electronic devices and offensive materials.

Eracleous faces one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass, or offend. He is set to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on November 27, with a potential penalty of up to five years in prison if found guilty.

AFP Acting Assistant Commissioner Matthew Gale stated that the NSI, formed in September, targets threats to Australia’s social cohesion, including attacks on federal parliamentarians. While supporting free speech, Gale emphasized that criminal acts like harassment will face strict enforcement through intelligence and prosecution.
