In mid-October, we reported on the “new municipality” being formed on the island by the 13,900 migrants who had arrived in Crete since the start of 2025.
Thanks to exceptionally calm weather and flat seas, that “municipality” has grown even larger in just a few weeks.
According to the latest official figures from the Hellenic Coast Guard, a total of 17,650 migrants have reached Crete so far in 2025, compared to just 5,050 for the entire year of 2024.
This represents an increase of nearly 250%, clear evidence that Crete has now become a major new migration corridor.
The most recent incident, involving a boat carrying 76 people, is just one more episode in what has essentially become a daily occurrence for the Coast Guard, which must now not only carry out rescue operations but also manage the consequences of this relentless surge in arrivals.
