Funeral Tomorrow For 19-Year-Old Greek Soldier Killed In Training

The funeral of the 19-year-old professional volunteer soldier (EPOP) who was fatally injured during a training exercise on Rhodes will take place on Friday, 28 November, in Tympaki, in the Municipality of Phaistos, his hometown.

The young soldier, who was born, raised and lived with his family in Tympaki, succumbed to his injuries following the incident during a scheduled live-fire training activity. A 39-year-old EPOP sergeant, married and father of two, who was with him at the time, was also seriously injured.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Church of Saint Titus. News of the young man’s tragic death has caused profound sorrow not only in Tympaki but across Crete.

Local media reported: “The 19-year-old killed at the firing range was Cretan. He was the son of the deputy commander of the Kokkini Pyrgos Coast Guard Station. News of his untimely death has understandably shocked his family, relatives, friends and colleagues.”

The Ministry of National Defence, following a decision by Minister Nikos Dendias, has declared three days of mourning across the Armed Forces until the day of the funeral.

The incident occurred during a scheduled defensive hand-grenade training exercise on Rhodes. The circumstances of the accident are under investigation, with early information suggesting an error during the handling or detonation of the grenade.

Further updates will be provided as the inquiry progresses.
