Greek MEP Urges EU Action to Protect Christians in Middle East and Africa

Nikolas Farantouris

SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance MEP Nikolas Farantouris has called for the “immediate and effective protection” of Christians in the Middle East, Syria, and Nigeria during an address to the European Parliament.

Speaking in Wednesday’s plenary session, Farantouris — a member of the Parliament’s Security and Defence Committee — warned that tens of thousands of Christian civilians, along with other ethnic and religious minorities such as Syria’s Alawite community, are being persecuted, displaced, or killed simply because of their faith.

He urged the European Union to recognise the situation “as a major humanitarian crisis of international significance rather than a regional issue,” stressing that Christians, Alawites, and Druze in Syria face ongoing persecution from the regime and affiliated militias, while in West Africa, Boko Haram and Islamic State offshoots continue to target Christian communities.

Farantouris reiterated the need to safeguard the “life and dignity” of all ethnic and religious groups. He added that he has consistently pressed EU leaders to take decisive action in response to the escalating violence against Christians across the Middle East and Africa.

“Europe and the international community must protect these people. Silence is not an option,” he said.
