Storm Adel: Critical 12-Hour Warning – Attica Now on Alert as “Red Code” Regions Expand

Storm Adel is intensifying, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail, and gale-force winds to large parts of Greece. Civil Protection has declared a nationwide “red alert”, with the next 12 hours (Thursday night to Friday noon) expected to be the most dangerous.

New “Red Code” Regions Added

From the early hours of Friday until midday, extreme weather is forecast for:

  • Eastern Macedonia
  • Thrace
  • Islands of the Eastern Aegean
  • Dodecanese

These join the regions already on maximum alert:

  • Ionian Islands
  • Epirus
  • Western Greece
  • Peloponnese
  • Central Macedonia
  • Parts of Thrace

Attica (including Athens) is also on high operational readiness.

Damage & Landslides Reported

  • Agnanta, Tzoumerka: Ground subsidence forced the evacuation of two homes; others remain at risk.
  • Ekklisochori, Ioannina: Widespread landslides.
  • Finikounda, Messinia: Roofs torn off homes and businesses, trees uprooted, prolonged power cuts.
  • Greater Athens: Minor issues Thursday evening (fallen trees in Chalandri, Ilioupoli, Egaleo). No major house flooding reported yet.

Forecast for Friday 28 November

  • Until midday: Heavy storms in the Ionian, western & southern Peloponnese
  • Morning to afternoon: Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, Halkidiki, Serres, Kilkis, Thessaloniki
  • From midday: Eastern Aegean islands
  • From evening: Dodecanese

Civil Protection Safety Guidelines

  • Secure outdoor objects that could be swept away.
  • Clear gutters and drains.
  • Never cross flooded streams or rivers – on foot or by car.
  • Avoid work at sea or coastal areas during lightning.
  • Shelter immediately during hail (stay in building or car).
  • Stay away from large trees, signs, balconies and power lines.
  • During lightning: unplug TVs, avoid plumbing pipes and landline phones.
  • If driving: pull over away from trees, stay inside with windows closed.
  • If outdoors and hair stands on end: crouch low, head between knees, minimise contact with ground.
