Giant Shark Catch Sparks Alarm in Greece

A local fisherman in Aliveri, Evia, had a rare and startling encounter when he caught a Mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) in his nets, according to reports from evima.gr.

The incident occurred in the waters between Nireas Beach and the AGET facilities, drawing attention across the local community. Known as the “cheetah of the sea,” the Mako shark is one of the fastest sharks in the world, capable of reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h, and is among the ocean’s most formidable predators.

While the species typically prefers open waters for hunting, it occasionally approaches coastal areas in pursuit of prey such as tuna and swordfish. Experts note that although Mako sharks can display aggressive behavior, attacks on humans are extremely rare, usually resulting from mistaken identity or provocation.

For the fisherman, encountering the Mako shark was a rare and unforgettable experience, leaving a lasting impression on him and the local community.
