Greece has introduced a financial incentive program to encourage permanent relocation to depopulated areas in the Evros region, aiming to address demographic decline in this border area.

Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Sofia Zacharaki tabled a legislative amendment in Parliament, which provides grants of up to €10,000 for households moving to specific municipalities: Soufli, Orestiada, and Didymoteicho.
Eligibility
The program is open to both single-person and multi-person households seeking permanent residency in designated settlements within these municipalities.
Aid Amounts
- €10,000 for relocation to a village with a population of 500 residents or fewer.
- €6,000 base for villages with more than 500 residents, plus €1,000 per minor child, capped at a total of €10,000.
Payment Structure
The grant is disbursed in two equal installments:
- The first half upon approval of the application.
- The second half after confirming one year of permanent residence in the area.
This pilot initiative, with a budget of approximately €10 million, forms part of a wider government strategy to support demographic growth, regional development, and revitalization in Evros. Applications are handled through the official platform at relocation.vouchers.gov.gr.
