Senior Russian General Killed in Moscow Car Bomb Explosion

Moscow – December 22, 2025 – A high-ranking Russian military officer, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, was killed on Monday morning when an explosive device detonated under his car in southern Moscow, Russia's Investigative Committee announced.

Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces' General Staff, died from his injuries after the blast occurred around 7 a.m. local time on Yaseneva Street in the Yasenevo district, reportedly as he was heading to work in his Kia vehicle.

Investigators have opened a criminal case into the murder, with spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko stating that "numerous lines of enquiry" are being pursued. One key hypothesis under investigation is that the attack was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services.

This incident echoes a similar assassination in December 2024, when Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, chief of Russia's nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, was killed by a bomb hidden on an electric scooter outside his Moscow apartment—an attack for which Ukraine's SBU security service claimed responsibility.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for Sarvarov's killing. The explosion marks the latest in a series of targeted attacks on senior Russian officials inside Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
