Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Monday, reaffirming Greece’s commitment to dialogue and long-term peace in Gaza. During the meeting, Mitsotakis emphasized Athens’ readiness to contribute to humanitarian aid and the reconstruction of Gaza.
The visit marked the first by a Greek prime minister to Ramallah since 2015, and the first by a European leader since the launch of the first phase of the Gaza Peace Plan in October. Mitsotakis expressed support for the Palestinian Authority as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and underlined Greece’s ongoing humanitarian efforts, including medical treatment in Greek hospitals for children rescued from the conflict.
Greece aims to act as a reliable interlocutor in the region, Mitsotakis said, highlighting the country’s commitment to resuming a political process aimed at a two-state solution, in line with its roles within the European Union and the United Nations Security Council. He also stressed the importance of reforms by the Palestinian Authority, noting that their implementation could strengthen operational capacity and foster trust between the parties.
President Abbas expressed gratitude for Greece’s support for Palestinian rights and peace efforts. He highlighted the importance of accelerating the implementation of the Trump peace plan within UN resolutions, advocating for a sustainable ceasefire that includes medical and pharmaceutical support. Abbas also emphasized the need for pressure on Israel to halt policies that undermine the two-state solution and acknowledged Greece’s significant role in facilitating dialogue.
