Wikipedia has created a special section titled “Signs of AI writing” to help readers identify whether a text may have been produced by artificial intelligence, as the use of large language models continues to grow across the internet.
The guide, highlighted in an article by James Folta on Literary Hub (lithub.com), brings together hundreds of examples that showcase the language patterns and stylistic habits often found in AI-generated content. Among the common signs listed are the frequent use of words and phrases such as “encompassing,” “valuable insight,” and “key turning point,” as well as the excessive use of bold formatting even when it is unnecessary.
Another indicator mentioned is the unexpected appearance of emojis within otherwise formal text — a trait that, according to the guide, can sometimes point to machine-generated writing.
Folta describes the resource as a “practical guide to recognising artificial intelligence,” noting that while the list is extensive and requires patience to explore, it is impressive for the dedication shown by the online encyclopedia. He comments that “it’s hard not to be struck by Wikipedia’s commitment” in compiling such a detailed reference.
Wikipedia does not take a strictly hostile stance toward the use of language models. Instead, it highlights the risk of homogenisation in language and style, warning that widespread AI-generated content could eventually undermine search engines and even Wikipedia itself by making texts sound increasingly uniform.
The encyclopedia ultimately urges readers to remain critical when consuming online content and to be aware of the subtle patterns that may reveal the hand of artificial intelligence.
