Powerful Bomb Explosion Strikes Bank in Thessaloniki

A powerful bomb explosion rocked a bank branch in the Evosmos district of Thessaloniki in the early hours of Thursday (December 25), causing extensive damage to nearby buildings and vehicles and alarming local residents.

According to information from authorities, a criminal group is believed to be behind the attack, having allegedly received instructions from inside a prison to carry out the bombing. The perpetrators reportedly planted an improvised explosive device at around 3:20 a.m. at the intersection of Karaoli and Dimitriou Avenue and Salamina Street, without issuing any warning.

The device, which is thought to have contained a detonator and around two kilograms of dynamite, produced intense flashes and scattered debris across a wide radius.

Bomb disposal experts, officers from the counterterrorism unit and members of the so-called Greek FBI rushed to the scene, collecting remnants of the explosive and reviewing security camera footage. The videos reportedly show the suspects approaching the site, placing the device and then fleeing.

Authorities are also examining whether the attack is linked to a deadly incident in May on Agiou Dimitriou Street, where a 39-year-old woman was killed in a bomb explosion.

Investigations are continuing to identify the members of the group and to determine how the attack was organised from within prison.
