French cinema icon Brigitte Bardot has passed away at the age of 91, her foundation announced on Sunday.
In a statement sent to AFP, the Brigitte Bardot Foundation expressed "immense sadness" at the death of its founder and president, Madame Brigitte Bardot—a world-renowned actress and singer who abandoned her illustrious career to dedicate her life to animal welfare and the work of her foundation. No details were provided regarding the time or location of her passing.
Bardot rose to global fame in 1956 with her breakout role in Roger Vadim's …And God Created Woman. She went on to star in approximately 50 films before retiring from acting in 1973 to focus exclusively on animal rights activism.
Bardot's legacy as a cultural symbol of liberation in the 1950s and 1960s endures, alongside her lifelong commitment to protecting animals through her foundation, established in 1986.
