Greek amateur football is in mourning after the death of 18-year-old AE Irakleiou goalkeeper Velissarios Zafeiroulis, who succumbed to his injuries following a serious road accident, the club announced on Friday.
According to the statement, the young shot-stopper was struck by a passing vehicle and suffered critical injuries. He was rushed to hospital, where he remained in the intensive care unit for several days, but tragically lost his battle for life on Friday morning.
AE Irakleiou confirmed the news in an emotional message, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a player widely respected for his character and dedication.
“Two days after the Birth of Christ, this date will remain etched in our hearts,” the club said. “Your teammates, the management, your coaches and everyone who had the fortune to know you and admire you will always remember you. Your ethos, dignity and your smile will guide us forever.”
The club also extended its condolences to his family, wishing them strength and courage in this time of grief.
