Metlen Energy & Metals announced on December 29, 2025, that the first shipment of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) handled by the company—destined for Bulgaria—has arrived at Greece's Alexandroupolis Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU).
Describing the event as a "significant milestone," Metlen highlighted its role as the region's largest private natural gas consumer and trader, as well as one of Greece's leading LNG importers. The company emphasized its contribution to securing vital supply chains across the Balkans, including Bulgaria, Romania, and neighboring markets.
Panagiotis Kanellopoulos, Chief Executive Director of International Energy Supply & Trading at Metlen, stated: "Metlen achieves a significant milestone with the arrival of its first cargo of American LNG at the Alexandroupolis FSRU, destined for export to Bulgaria. Since 2010, we have reliably supplied the Greek market, and in 2018, we became the first company to import LNG via Revithoussa and export it to Bulgaria. Over the years, we have demonstrated Greece's role as a true energy hub and Metlen's leading position in ensuring reliable and competitive LNG across the Balkans and beyond."
This delivery underscores Metlen's longstanding partnership with Bulgaria's Bulgargaz, described as one of the most stable cross-border energy collaborations in Southeast Europe, further bolstering regional energy security through diversified sources. The cargo is part of a series of US-sourced LNG supplies awarded to Metlen (along with partners like TotalEnergies and Shell) for deliveries via Alexandroupolis during the 2025-2026 winter season.
