Hospital admissions for influenza in Greece have more than doubled, according to the latest weekly epidemiological surveillance report on respiratory infections released by the National Public Health Organisation (EODY).
The report, covering the period from December 22 to 28, 2025, and published on Friday, January 2, highlights a sharp increase in flu-related hospitalisations nationwide. A significant proportion of the cases are described as severe, with many involving unvaccinated patients.
In response to the surge, EODY has reiterated strong recommendations aimed at limiting the spread of influenza and reducing severe illness.
The health authority is urging immediate vaccination against influenza, particularly for high-risk groups, stressing that vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure, offering substantial protection against severe disease and death.
EODY also recommends the prompt initiation of antiviral treatment for individuals at high risk of flu-related complications as soon as compatible symptoms appear, regardless of whether a diagnostic test result is available. In cases of outbreaks within closed settings, such as long-term care facilities, the use of preventive antiviral treatment should also be considered.
Additionally, EODY has called for strict adherence to protective measures, including frequent handwashing, avoiding contact between hands and the face, wearing masks in crowded indoor spaces for high-risk individuals, practising proper respiratory hygiene, ensuring good ventilation, and staying at home while symptomatic, with mask use if leaving the house is unavoidable.
EODY said it remains on high alert and continues to closely monitor epidemiological and virological data as flu activity intensifies across the country.
