After Venezuela, Donald Trump Eyes Greenland Next

US President Donald Trump has issued a warning to Venezuela’s vice president and acting head of state, Delcy Rodríguez, cautioning her against defying Washington in the aftermath of the capture of former president Nicolás Maduro.

Speaking in a telephone interview with The Atlantic on Sunday, January 4, Trump said Rodríguez would face severe consequences if she failed to comply with US expectations.

“If she doesn’t do the right thing, she will pay very dearly—possibly more than Maduro,” Trump said.

The remarks came a day after Trump stated that the United States would be willing to “administer” Venezuela following Maduro’s arrest. He added that Rodríguez had appeared “willing to do whatever we consider necessary,” comments that contrasted sharply with a defiant public speech she delivered shortly afterward.

In a separate interview on Saturday, Trump described regime change in Venezuela as a legitimate objective, responding to criticism from sections of the US political right traditionally opposed to foreign interventions.

“You know, rebuilding there and regime change—whatever you want to call it—is better than what you have now,” Trump said. “It can’t get worse.”

Trump also suggested that Venezuela may not be the last country where the United States could intervene, raising concerns about Greenland, the Danish autonomous territory.

“We absolutely need Greenland,” Trump said, claiming the island is “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.”

His comments are likely to heighten international concern over Washington’s foreign policy direction, particularly amid growing tensions involving sovereignty, resource control and global security competition.
