Greek Police Bust Electricity Theft Ring, 10 Arrested

A coordinated police operation targeting residential areas in Aspropyrgos led to ten arrests on Tuesday morning, January 13, authorities reported. The operation was carried out by the Western Attica Police Directorate with support from multiple units, including the Western Attica Crime Division, OPKE, the DIAS motorcycle patrol, Traffic and Police Operations Directorates, the DAOE, a drone unit, and a police dog.

During the operation, crews from the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDHE) removed 420 meters of illegally installed electrical cables supplying unauthorized electricity to residences.

The ten individuals arrested face charges for electricity theft and, in some cases, violations of weapons and personal data laws, according to Greek Police (ELAS).

Additionally, authorities seized a shotgun, a metal knuckle, and a recording device with a camera during the inspections.

Traffic-related violations were also addressed, with 12 traffic offences recorded for driving without a license, using a mobile phone while driving, and other infractions. As a result, two driving licenses and two vehicle registration certificates were confiscated.

The operation reflects an ongoing effort by Greek authorities to combat both illegal utility connections and broader criminal activity in the region, enhancing public safety and law enforcement compliance.
