Nobel Committee Reacts to Machado Gifting Trump Her Medal

The Norwegian Nobel Committee clarified on Friday that the Nobel Peace Prize remains permanently tied to the original recipient, regardless of what the winner does with the medal or cash award.

The announcement followed Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado’s decision to hand part of her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Machado, honoured with the 2025 Peace Prize, presented her gold medal to Trump, who publicly thanked her for the gesture. The White House released a photograph showing the former president holding the medal in a golden frame above his head. According to officials, Trump plans to keep the medal in his possession.

Machado’s award included the gold medal, a diploma, and a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.19 million).

In a statement, the Nobel Foundation emphasized: “Regardless of what happens to the medal, diploma, or prize money, the original recipient remains recorded in history as the awardee.”

The Foundation added that Nobel laureates face no restrictions on handling their award items. They may keep, gift, sell, or donate the medal and other components as they wish.
