NATO Chief Assures Trump That Allies Will Stand with the U.S.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte assured U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos that European allies will stand with the United States in the event of an attack. Rutte made the promise after Trump expressed doubts earlier this month about NATO countries’ willingness to support the U.S.

Rutte said, “You can be absolutely certain that if the United States ever comes under attack, your allies will stand with you. That is an absolute guarantee.” He added, “I want to tell you this because it is important. It saddens me if you think otherwise,” citing NATO’s intervention in Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks as an example of allied support.

Earlier this month, President Trump stated he “doubts” that NATO allies “will be there for us when we really need them,” while emphasizing, “We will always be there for NATO, even if it is not there for us.”

After their meeting, Trump posted on Truth Social that he and Rutte designed “the framework for a future agreement” regarding Greenland. He also confirmed that the U.S. will not impose the planned tariffs set to take effect on February 1. According to Trump, the framework addresses Washington’s requirements regarding Greenland and paves the way for further cooperation in the region.

A NATO spokesperson described the meeting as “very productive,” noting that the two leaders discussed the critical importance of Arctic security for all NATO allies. Earlier in the day, Trump, speaking at Davos, ruled out using military force to take control of Greenland, but called for “immediate negotiations” regarding its acquisition by the United States.
