A powerful weather system has battered Greece since early Wednesday, unleashing heavy rain, thunderstorms, snowfall, and gale-force winds across the country. In the capital, Athens, the extreme conditions have led to widespread chaos, including traffic gridlock, flooding, and power outages.

Residents in several neighborhoods reported power cuts lasting up to two hours on Wednesday evening, affecting areas such as Pagrati, Moschato, Ano Glyfada, Ano Voula, Voula, Nikaia, Renti, and Tavros.

Flooded roads stranded drivers in Glyfada, Tatoi, and Glyka Nera, prompting traffic police to close Vouliagmenis Avenue in Glyfada as a safety measure.

Civil protection officials issued an urgent evacuation advisory for residents of the Gorytsa district in Aspropyrgos (west of Athens), directing them to move to the nearby Genoktonia area after a local stream overflowed its banks.

Since Wednesday afternoon, the fire brigade has handled more than 75 emergency calls across greater Athens, primarily for water pumping operations and removing fallen trees in central, southern, and western districts.

The severe weather front is forecast to continue through Thursday afternoon, with ongoing risks of heavy precipitation, strong winds, and related hazards.
