A strong run ends just short of the final, but Greece keeps medal hopes alive at the 2026 Men's European Water Polo Championship in Belgrade.

In Friday's semifinal, the Greek national team fell to Hungary by a score of 15-12. Greece showed early promise, building a lead with sharp attacking play across the first two quarters in a tense, high-stakes battle at the Belgrade Arena. Hungary, however, turned the tide decisively from the third period onward, regaining composure and capitalizing on key moments to establish and protect a three-goal cushion through the finish.

Hungary advances to Sunday's gold-medal final (facing the winner of Serbia vs. Italy). For Coach Theodoros Vlachos' squad, the focus now shifts to the bronze-medal match on Sunday at 17:00 local time, where Greece will take on Italy—the loser of the other semifinal.

This sets up a rematch with Italy, whom Greece previously faced in the second phase of the tournament. A podium finish would cap a solid campaign for the Greeks, who remained competitive against one of water polo's perennial powerhouses.
