Greek authorities launched a search and rescue operation northeast of Ikaria after locating an unconscious minor and 50 foreign nationals in the wider land area near the island’s airport, while four people remain missing at sea.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the operation began in the early morning hours, focusing on the surrounding maritime area where the missing individuals reportedly traveled aboard a dinghy. Authorities say the four missing people were believed to have been on the same vessel from which the foreign nationals disembarked, but rescuers have so far failed to locate them.
Search teams found the unconscious minor and the group of 50 foreign nationals on land northeast of Ikaria. Officials did not immediately release further details about the minor’s condition.
The Hellenic Coast Guard continues the search with significant resources. The operation includes a Coast Guard floating ambulance, a patrol vessel, a helicopter from the Hellenic Air Force, and a private vessel assisting in the effort.
Authorities say the search will continue until all missing individuals are located.
