An elderly woman was found floating in Ermoupolis Harbour on Syros on Sunday afternoon, prompting passersby to call the Syros Port Authority, whose officers recovered her with the help of a private boat.
Authorities confirmed that the woman, who had lived for over 100 years, was a resident of Syros. Her relatives identified her at the hospital where they took her.
Investigators have not yet determined how she ended up in the water. Witnesses reported seeing no one with her, and officials suspect she may have been alone when she drowned. They are examining whether she walked to the harbor by herself or left a nearby home.
The Syros Port Authority has launched a formal investigation. Officials will transfer her body to Piraeus for an autopsy and further examination.
