Sydney, January 26, 2026 — The 2026 Australia Day Honours List has once again showcased the profound impact of the Greek Australian diaspora, with at least ten individuals of Greek heritage recognised among the 949 Australians honoured for exceptional service and achievements.
From judicial leadership and medical advancements to philanthropy, volunteering, and public safety, these recipients embody Hellenic values of philotimo (honour and duty), generosity, and dedication to the greater good.
At the pinnacle of the honours, The Honourable Chief Justice Christopher John Kourakis AC (South Australia) was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC)—one of the nation's highest civilian honours—for his eminent service to the judiciary, law reform, social justice, gender equity, and the Greek community. As the former Chief Justice of South Australia, Kourakis has been a trailblazer in promoting fairness and access to justice, while maintaining strong ties to Hellenic organisations and cultural life.

Other standout recipients include:
- (Victoria) — Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the community through charitable organisations and regional support. His philanthropy, including the Peter Copulos Cancer and Wellness Centre at Shepparton Regional Hospital, has made a lasting difference in health and welfare.

- Viola Kalokerinos OAM (ACT) — Honoured with an OAM for 50 years of tireless volunteering across charities, multicultural festivals (including the National Multicultural Festival's loukoumades stall), churches, schools, palliative care, and women's groups—quietly strengthening Canberra's diverse community fabric.

- Apostolos Gaganis OAM — Recognised for service to the community, reflecting ongoing commitment in Greek Australian circles.

- Nicholas Lintzeris AM (NSW) — Awarded AM for significant contributions in medicine and health.

- Professor Nicholas Manolios AM (NSW) — Honoured with AM for service in academia, medicine, or related fields.

- Nicolas George Mersiades AM (NSW) — Recognised with AM for community or professional dedication.

- Acting Sergeant Nektarios Parissis APM — Received the Australian Police Medal (APM) for meritorious service in law enforcement.
Additional Greek Australians were celebrated for roles in emergency services, education, multicultural advocacy, and beyond, underscoring the diaspora's broad influence in building a more inclusive Australia.
These honours follow a proud tradition—Greek Australians have consistently featured in recent lists, from community stalwarts like Kleoniki Matziaris-Garay OAM in 2025 to leaders in various sectors today.
The 2026 recipients highlight how Hellenic heritage continues to enrich Australian society through hard work, compassion, and excellence.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Governor-General Sam Mostyn praised the honourees for their "selfless contributions," a sentiment echoed across the Greek Australian community.
