The European Commission has approved approximately €74 billion in defence funding for eight European Union member states, including Greece, under the “Security Action for Europe” (SAFE) initiative.
The approval followed a strict evaluation of the participating countries’ National Defence Investment Plans submitted under the SAFE framework. The initiative also strengthens Ukraine’s integration into the European security ecosystem, ensuring that European support remains flexible and sustainable.
The European Commission announced that initial payments under the SAFE programme are expected to begin in March. At the same time, it continues to assess SAFE-related investment plans submitted by other EU member states.
The European Union launched the SAFE defence mechanism last May as part of the broader “Readiness 2030” programme. The initiative aims to provide financial tools that enable EU member states to increase investment in defence capabilities and enhance collective security.
