Authorities in Heraklion, Crete, placed eight children aged 3 to 13 in temporary care at Venizeleio Hospital after the conviction of their parents for repeated domestic violence. The children, three boys and five girls, currently reside in a specially prepared hospital ward while officials determine their long-term care.
The father, 44, received a prison sentence of two years and six months, while the 32-year-old mother was sentenced to seven years and three months. Initially, the children were entrusted to their paternal grandmother, but she could not manage the responsibility. Care then passed to the maternal grandfather, a 60-year-old man from Cyprus, who traveled to Crete to help.
However, the grandfather eventually requested assistance from the Domestic Violence Unit of the First Police Department, citing difficulty managing the children. During a police visit to the family home, the 13-year-old daughter reported ongoing abusive behavior from the grandfather toward her and her siblings. Authorities arrested the grandfather for domestic violence, and he remains in custody ahead of his hearing, which was postponed to the following day. The grandfather denies physically harming the children, claiming he only raised his voice to manage a challenging situation.
The children now remain in Venizeleio Hospital under temporary protective care. Authorities continue investigating the family’s circumstances to decide on long-term guardianship.
