The statements of ruling party Member of Parliament Hasan Ufuk Çakır, who accused pensioners of demanding increases at a time when Turkey is surrounded by enemies, including Greece, caused a stir in the neighboring country.
Speaking on a television show, Turkish MP Hasan Ufuk Çakır fired back at pensioners regarding their demands for a salary increase.
"They are constantly complaining about a pension of 20,000 Turkish liras (390 euros). Brother, you don't live in Switzerland! Greece is next to you, Armenia is over there, Syria is below," the Justice and Development Party MP said.
After the uproar, the AKP MP, who switched from the opposition CHP (Republican People's Party) in January, responded to criticism regarding his statements about pensioners, stating that he had not received any negative criticism from his party, noting that there are those who, because they are "jealous" of him, "want to destroy" his relationship with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and remove him from the party.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time Hasan Ufuk Çakır has been in the news in Turkey. A video was recently released showing him appearing to salute in front of Erdoğan.
