Former New Democracy MP Georgios Papadopoulos Passes Away at 91

The New Democracy party and the Greek political community are mourning the loss of one of its founding figures. Georgios Papadopoulos, a former Member of Parliament for Kozani and one of the original members of the party’s first Parliamentary Group in 1974, has died at the age of 91.

Born in 1934 in Korifi, Voios, Kozani, Georgios Papadopoulos pursued higher education in political science and economics. He completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Universities of Thessaloniki, West Berlin, and Zurich. He earned a doctorate in political science from the University of West Berlin, served as an associate professor at the University of Zurich, and also taught at the University of Freiburg. He produced a significant body of academic and written work in both Greek and German.

Papadopoulos was first elected as MP for Kozani with New Democracy in the landmark 1974 elections — the first free national elections after the fall of the military junta — and was re-elected in 1977. Known for his dynamic public presence, dedication to his constituency, and consistent service to both his homeland and the party, he earned the respect and affection of his fellow citizens.

In its official statement, the New Democracy Press Office expressed deep sorrow and gratitude:

“New Democracy bids farewell with sadness to Georgios Papadopoulos, one of the founding members who helped form the party’s first Parliamentary Group in 1974. He maintained a strong public presence, worked tirelessly for his country and the party, and was deeply loved by his fellow citizens. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Georgios Papadopoulos leaves behind a legacy as an important figure of Greece’s post-dictatorship democratic transition and as one of the early pillars of New Democracy under Konstantinos Karamanlis.

The party, along with many who knew him, offers its sincere condolences to his family and close ones. May his memory be eternal.
