Greece’s women’s national water polo team won its sixth medal in European Championship history on Saturday night in Funchal, Portugal, claiming bronze with a 15-8 victory over Italy.
The result gave Greece its 16th medal overall in major international competitions. The national team climbed onto the third step of the podium in a tournament where it has now collected four silver medals and two bronze medals, but still has not won a European title.
Greece has built a long record of success in top-level events since winning silver at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Across major competitions, the women’s team has won five gold medals, five silver medals, and six bronze medals. Greece has also reached the podium at least once in every major tournament it has participated in.
