Greek police arrested a well-known former footballer in Menidi after officers caught him immediately after he bought drugs for personal use, authorities said.
The case involves a 59-year-old ex-player who reportedly made at least 80 appearances for one of Greece’s biggest clubs. Police did not publicly name him in the information provided.
The Sub-Directorate for Drug Prosecution, operating under the Directorate for Combating Organised Crime, carried out the operation on Tuesday (3/2) in the wider Acharnes area of Attica. Officers arrested two people aged 46 and 59 for drug possession and trafficking offences.
Authorities also launched a search for a 27-year-old man who they believe played a role in the same case.
Police said they solved the case after using intelligence, targeted actions, data checks, cross-referencing, and profiling. Investigators said the evidence pointed to criminal activity by the 46-year-old and the 27-year-old in drug distribution.

During the operation, officers arrested the 59-year-old former footballer in Ano Liosia after finding him carrying improvised paper packages containing heroin weighing 0.8 grams and crack cocaine weighing 0.2 grams.
Police said he bought the drugs shortly before his arrest from the 46-year-old and the 27-year-old, paying €20.
Authorities took the arrested suspects to the competent prosecutor. Police continued the investigation to locate and arrest the 27-year-old and to map the suspected drug trafficking network operating in the area.
Police said officers also seized cash and equipment during the operation. The seized items included €4,037, a mobile phone, and a functioning audio and video surveillance system consisting of seven security cameras, a recording device, a television monitor, and a digital coin counter.
