A 59-year-old man died on Sunday, 8 February 2026, after his car veered off the road and plunged into a cliff around 300 metres deep in Evrytania.

The fatal crash occurred on the Proussos–Tornos road, a short distance from the Holy Monastery of Proussos. Authorities said the vehicle left its course under circumstances that remain unclear.

The victim, a resident of Tornos, drove the vehicle at the time of the accident.

According to evrytanika.gr, emergency services launched a large-scale rescue operation at the scene, involving the Fire Service, Police, and EKAB ambulance crews. Rescuers worked for an extended period due to the steep and difficult terrain.

A total of 31 firefighters took part in the operation, including the O.O.E.D. unit of the 7th EMAC and the “Ikaros” drone team from the Thessaly Fire Service command.

Rescuers located and recovered the driver unconscious. EKAB personnel later took custody of the victim.
