Crete Teacher Hospitalised After Violent Assault Inside School

An outsider attacked and injured a high school teacher inside a school in Chania, raising fresh concerns over rising violence in the city’s education community.

The incident took place on Monday, 2 February 2026, when the teacher intervened to remove a non-student from the school premises. The Chania Secondary Teachers’ Association (ELME Chania) said the outsider punched the teacher in the face and then knocked him to the ground.

ELME Chania reported that the attacker continued the assault by kicking the teacher repeatedly in different parts of his body.

The teacher acted calmly and with pedagogical responsibility while trying to protect the school environment, the union said. After the attack, colleagues transferred him to hospital to receive first aid.

ELME Chania said school violence has troubled the area for years, with serious incidents recorded in several school units across the prefecture.

The union has repeatedly warned authorities about the growing problem and blamed understaffing at KEDASY support services for limiting the effective handling of such incidents.

ELME Chania also linked the issue to increasing pressure on families, noting that parents often work long hours or multiple jobs, which negatively affects student psychosocial balance.

The union highlighted shortages of psychologists, social workers, and specialised staff who could support prevention and intervention in violent incidents.

ELME Chania expressed solidarity with the teacher from the 1st General Lyceum of Chania and called for immediate state intervention to protect educators and ensure schools operate safely.
