Factory Owner In Custody Over Blast That Killed Five Women

Authorities placed the owner of the Violanta biscuit factory in pre-trial detention in Trikala following his appearance before an investigating judge, according to reports.

Fire Service investigators from the Directorate for the Investigation of Arson Crimes arrested him again after officials upgraded the case against him to felony level.

Investigators said new evidence from the Directorate’s inquiry into the explosion and fire at the company’s factory led prosecutors to strengthen the charges. The incident resulted in the deaths of five women.

Authorities upgraded the accusations to causing an explosion with possible intent and negligent homicide, according to the same information.

Reports said the factory owner did not answer the investigating judge’s questions. He requested and received additional time to prepare his defence statement.
