Residents and local collectives in Exarchia transformed the fenced-off metro construction site at Exarchia Square into a lively public protest on Sunday, 15 February 2026. Organisers aimed to highlight the neighbourhood’s desire for a human-centred urban environment, chanting slogans and holding banners under the motto: “The construction site belongs to the square, the square belongs to the streets.”

The demonstration included music, communal kitchens, games, and artistic activities. A basketball hoop on Valtetsiou Street hosted matches between children and adults, symbolising the community’s commitment to preserving the area for residents.
Marina, member of the “No Metro in Exarchia Square” assembly, told reporters: “We came to block the space, our beloved square, with joy and energy, and reclaim public space.” She criticised strict regulations in the neighbourhood and emphasised the importance of open, shared spaces.
Eleni, representing the Exarchia parents’ assembly, said the protest also addressed broader community concerns, including the closure of local kindergartens and the pressure from rising Airbnb rentals. “We want our neighbourhood to remain for residents, not only for transient visitors or those who can pay high rents. Children represent the real future of our community,” she said.
The Open Orchestra contributed a cultural element to the protest. Member Barbara explained: “We support the reclaiming of public space and resist the neglect of culture. The square has been blocked for one and a half years while metro work remains paused, and the community deserves access.”
Residents blocked streets surrounding the construction site and distributed informational material, calling for the restoration of the square and safer, more inclusive neighbourhood planning.
