Greece Joins Global AI Talks as Mitsotakis Attends India Summit

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis travelled to New Delhi to attend the India AI Impact Summit 2026 on 18–19 February, as government sources described the visit as a strategic decision of high political and geo-economic importance.

Government officials said the summit aimed to shape a global policy framework for Artificial Intelligence, focusing on measurable social and developmental impact under the theme “People-Planet-Progress”. They added that India wanted to shift international debate from broad declarations to concrete results, practical partnerships, and scalable applications.

The same sources said Mitsotakis’ presence placed Greece at the centre of this transition and strengthened its role in global AI dialogue as a European bridge to the Global South.

The summit brought together heads of state, international organisations, and leading technology executives. More than 20 heads of state and government and representatives from over 60 countries were expected to participate.

Mitsotakis travelled with Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou and Giannis Mastrogeorgiou, Special Secretary for Long-Term Planning at the Presidency of the Government.

Government sources said the prime minister’s participation boosted Greece’s international visibility in a sector expected to shape geo-economic power in the coming decades. They said Greece aimed to position itself as a country that combined innovation, regulation, and social benefit, taking part in global technology governance as a co-shaper rather than an observer.

Mitsotakis planned to address the summit and hold meetings with senior officials and top technology leaders. His scheduled meetings included:

  • Michael Kratsios, Assistant to the US President and head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy

  • Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind

  • Brad Smith, Vice Chair of Microsoft

  • Mati Staniszewski, CEO of ElevenLabs

  • Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI

  • Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral A.I

On Thursday, Mitsotakis was set to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit.

Government sources said the meeting followed the August 2023 joint statement in Athens that upgraded relations to a strategic partnership, as well as Mitsotakis’ official visit to India in February 2024. They said bilateral relations had since moved into a broader upgrade across multiple levels, while Greece strengthened its presence in India by opening two new consulates in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Officials said Greece’s geographic position at the crossroads of three continents made it an ideal bridge to Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. They added that Greece aimed to cooperate with countries involved in the Middle East–India–Europe Corridor (IMEC), positioning itself as a strategic geopolitical and commercial gateway of the Indo-Pacific into Europe.

Government sources said cooperation with India continued to expand across security and defence, investment and trade, science and technology, education, culture, tourism, and agriculture. They also pointed to the EU–India trade agreement as a factor reshaping and strengthening the bilateral trade and investment framework by creating new market access opportunities for European products and businesses.

As part of his programme, Mitsotakis was scheduled to give an interview on Wednesday to Times Now journalist Srinjoy Chowdhury. He was also due to attend an official dinner hosted by Modi in honour of summit leaders.

On Thursday, Mitsotakis was set to participate in summit proceedings at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition and Convention Centre before holding his meeting with Modi at 1pm Greece time.
