Secondary Teachers Hold Strike Over Disciplinary Hearings

Secondary school teachers across Greece will hold a three-hour work stoppage on Wednesday from 8:00am to 11:00am, protesting disciplinary proceedings against colleagues who participated in a strike-abstention action linked to individual teacher evaluations.

The nationwide mobilisation will affect all Gymnasiums and Lyceums. The Federation of Secondary State School Teachers (OLME) decided on the action through its Executive Board, accusing the government and the Ministry of Education of creating a “climate of intimidation” and “criminalising union activity”.

OLME said authorities launched disciplinary procedures against teachers for joining the legally declared strike-abstention from the individual evaluation process. The union argued that these measures directly challenge the right to strike and undermine fundamental labour freedoms in the education sector.

The union also announced an additional facilitating stoppage for local teacher associations (ELME) that wish to attend a protest in Tripoli, outside the Regional Directorate of Education for the Peloponnese.

According to OLME, multiple teachers in the Peloponnese region have received summonses to appear for hearings and submit explanations on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, with scheduled appearances set for 10:00am, 10:30am and 11:00am. OLME said the summonses relate to their participation in the union’s strike-abstention from individual evaluation.

OLME demanded an immediate halt to all disciplinary actions and called for the full clearance of the targeted teachers. The federation urged educators to defend public schooling and protect workplace rights.

Despite the stoppage, students have been instructed to attend school normally on Wednesday. Schools will record teaching gaps during the 8:00am–11:00am period, while classes and the timetable will resume as normal after 11:00am.

OLME said it will continue its mobilisation campaign, insisting that teachers committed no disciplinary offence and acted within collective union decisions protected by the Constitution.
