Schools in the municipality of Ioannina will remain closed on Monday, 9 March, after a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck the region.
The Municipality of Ioannina announced that authorities suspended operations at all schools and municipal childcare centres for precautionary reasons following the strong seismic tremor early Sunday and the ongoing aftershock activity.
Municipal technical teams will conduct inspections of school buildings throughout the day to assess their structural condition and ensure they are safe before reopening.
The municipality said officials made the decision solely to protect students, teachers and the wider school community.
Inspection teams from municipal services will work with the Epirus department of the Technical Chamber of Greece to examine school facilities across the area.
The earthquake also caused damage to homes in the village of Polydroso Souliou, located close to the epicentre. At least seven houses suffered damage with visible cracks in their walls, while three were deemed uninhabitable.
According to the mayor of Souli, Thanasis Danis, inspection teams will also visit all schools in the municipality to determine whether they sustained damage and whether classes can safely resume.
Authorities also reported damage to farmhouses in villages of Dodoni, while cracks appeared in a church in the community of Dovla.
